Action movies of all types and budgets are released left and right. With all the streaming services, direct-to-VOD, and small series, movies that may not even have been greenlit years ago are coming to our eyes quite easily. With so many titles to come, which should they all be looking forward to? Here are five action movies releasing relatively soon that we’re looking forward to.
Gerard Butler’s latest action movie, Plane, is about a pilot (Butler) who has to land his plane due to weather conditions and finds himself in a war zone with his crew and passengers. As for those involved besides Butler, the cast includes Mike Colter, Yoson An, Daniela Pineda, Paul Ben-Victor, and a host of others. The film is directed by Jean-François Richet who directed the excellent Mesrine: Killer instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, two films that show skills for drama and action. The film here is written by Charles Cumming for whom this is a feature debut and JP Davis who previously wrote the recently released film The contractor with Chris Pine. As for Butler as an action star? Good, 300 was quite interesting, Law abiding citizen was fun, and den of thieves was one of the longest, uneven, Heat-wannabes for a long time, so he’s everywhere. Overall, this team has an interesting group of talent here, including people with established careers and people who will definitely bring a fresh perspective. Will it be a success or a failure? We will see in 2023.
Violent Night (2022)
A Christmas action movie? YES! Finally another holiday-themed action movie. The universe needs more and having a badass Santa at the center of it all is just what some of us need to get our butts in the movie theater seats. violent night is all about Santa Claus coming to save a family after mercenaries storm their house and wreak havoc. That being said, the trailer makes it look like something won’t be what it seems. The main selling point here, beyond a badass Santa, is the fact that said Santa is played by David Harbor and looks like he’s having a good time. His take on Santa seems to be perfect for the film. While his Hellboy movie was pretty bad, he wasn’t to blame and did his best. Harbor has a great track record for going all out when needed and holding back when the movie calls for it. Rounding out the cast are Beverly D’Angelo (who is no stranger to movie vacations), John Leguizamo, and Cam Gigandet, who’s released a bunch of midrange action flicks over the past few years. The film here is directed by Tommy Wirkola and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Wirkola is best known for the dead snow movies, the Netflix movie – Noomi Rapace what happened mondayand Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The man is familiar with the action and unafraid of what might be considered a bit of an absurd edit. Casey and Miller are best known for the sonic the hedgehog movies and 12 deadly days, another holiday movie with violent tendencies. violent night looks like a winner for sure and considering it’s been since The long goodnight kiss since we had a good fun action movie for the holiday season, go for it!
Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant. That’s it, that’s the pitch. Do we really need to say more? Ok, so the movie is about a drug deal gone wrong that leads to the search for a politician’s son, corruption and of course a conspiracy. This one, in addition to the most cited names, is from writer-director Gareth Evans whom action fans know for Lowering movies that, if you haven’t seen them…well, you’re missing out. Once those required action viewings are complete, you’ll know exactly why fans of Evans’ work can’t wait for this one. 2023 can’t come soon enough here.
Extraction 2 (2023)
A Netflix movie worth watching, this one is clearly a sequel, and it brings back Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake. Working with him on screen are Daniel Bernhardt (a regular in mid-range action films) Golshifteh Farahani and Tinatin Dalakishvili. Talent behind the camera includes director Sam Hargrave who directed the first and is a well-established stunt coordinator as well as Marvel’s Joe Russo. This one, like the first, screams for a theatrical release, but doesn’t get one. He’s top talent in a streaming release and given how much fun the first one was, this one is one movie to look forward to. Another highly anticipated 2023 release.
Wild Hi (2022)
De Niro in a non-massive mid-budget action movie might sound sad to some, but could actually be pretty cool. Here he is joined by John Malkovich, Jack Huston and Willa Fitzgerald. The cast is for sure interesting and given that Malkovich seems to pick movies either off the top of his hat or based on how much fun he’ll have making them, chances are there’ll be a lot of fun action here. The cast should be more than enough to draw everyone in, but let’s also take a look at the story and the minds behind the film. The premise here is a basic revenge movie in which a former drug addict seeks revenge on the people he holds responsible for the death of his beloved. This one is directed by Randall Emmett who is usually a producer with only one directing credit before that with the 2021 movie Midnight in the Switchgrass (which was terrible), so what he does here with such a stacked cast will be interesting to see. The scenario for hello savage is courtesy of Adam Taylor Barker for whom this is a feature debut and Chris Sivertson who made the excellent The lossOkay brawlerand the doubtful I know who killed meso his CV is varied to say the least in style and quality.
What do you think of the titles above? Worth a watch? Which ones are you looking forward to in the next few months?
