Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will not comment on the 2024 race

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declined to say whether he plans to run for the 2024 Republican presidential seat during his high-stakes debate with Democrat Charlie Crist.

DeSantis remained silent after Crist asked him to promise to serve out his entire term.

“Yes or no, Ron. Will you serve a full four-year term if re-elected governor of Florida?” Crist asked during Monday night’s clash.

“It’s not a difficult question. It’s a good question. He won’t tell you,” Crist added.

After a brief silence, DeSantis shot back with his own line back.

“The only old, worn donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist,” DeSantis said.

The heated debate marks the only time the pair will face off before Election Day on November 8.

On abortion, Crist warned that the governor would ban all abortions as other GOP-led states have done since the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade.

Crist also criticized DeSantis for ferrying Venezuelan asylum seekers from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, a move he called a publicity stunt that used immigrants as human pawns.

DeSantis threw verbal grenades at Crist for being a strong supporter of President Biden, whom Republicans accuse of allegedly mismanaging the economy and failing to contain inflation.

This gave Crist the opening he needed to jibe back around 2024.

“Ron, you talk a lot about Joe Biden. I get it, you think you are going to run against him, I can see how you could get confused,” Crist said. “But you are running for governor.”

DeSantis holds a solid lead in the polls over Crist, who served a single term as governor as a Republican before switching parties and winning a Tampa-area congressional seat as a Democrat.

DeSantis has sought to expand his national profile by championing right-wing causes, including his outspoken opposition to COVID restrictions, his strident anti-immigration stance, and his support for the controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law that limits talk about sex. orientation and gender identity in public schools.

His ambitions have drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump, who sees DeSantis as a potential rival for control of the GOP.

DeSantis also declined to join other potential Republican candidates in pledging to only run for the White House if Trump skips the race.
