With $2.9 billion worldwide, James Cameron Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time, but that was over a decade ago, which leaves us wondering if the next Avatar sequels have a chance to regain that box office glory. In addition to The way of the waterJames Cameron has three more Avatar sequels in the works, but what if The way of the water bombs ?
In a conversation with Total Film, James Cameron said he would cut the Avatar deductible if The way of the water did not impress at the box office. This would leave Avatar 3 as the series finale. “The market might tell us we’re done in three months, or we might be half done, which means, “OK, let’s finish the story in movie three, and don’t go on and on,” if not simply not profitable, said Cameron. “We’re in a different world now than we were when I wrote that stuff, even. It’s punch one-two – the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, people may be reminded of going to the theater. This movie definitely does. The question is: how many people don’t care now?“
Although they remained atop the box office throne, audiences have long wondered if we really need another Avatar movie, not to mention four more, but I learned long ago never to underestimate James Cameron. While I don’t expect Avatar: The Way of the Water to dethrone its predecessor, I’m pretty confident it will do well.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of the Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow them, the efforts they make to protect themselves, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies that they endure. Avatar: The Way of the Water will be released in theaters on December 16.
Do you think we’ll see all four Avatar sequels?
