James Cameron Says ‘Avatar 3’ Could End the Series

For years James Cameron worked on not one, not two, not even three, but four Avatar suites. The first of the suites, The way of the water, finally hits theaters this Christmas. The plan is for each of the following three Avatars every two years: in 2024, 2026 and 2028.

But that’s the plan. And a lot can change in Hollywood in six years. When Cameron first started working on these sequels, he was doing them for 20th Century Fox, the studio that released the original. Avatar. Now 20th Century Fox doesn’t even exist. What’s left of it is known as 20th Century Studios, and it’s a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. And they may not want to release three more of these films if the first fails.

James Cameron himself admits it could potentially happen. He said Total movie that there’s a chance the franchise will end after just two sequels, depending on how those upcoming installments do at the box office. As he said:

We’re in a different world now than we were when I wrote that stuff, even. It’s punch one-two – the pandemic and streaming. Or, conversely, people may be reminded of going to the theater. This movie definitely does. The question is, how many people are giving as— now?

Some people pretend they don’t care Avataror to have completely forgotten about it since its release in 2009. But the first film remains the highest-grossing film in history; somebody there is intrigued by the concept of more of these things. I think The way of the water is guaranteed to do well. But four more sequels? There may not be this great appetite for Avatar.

While Cameron described these films as “awfully expensive”, he also promised “we’re delivering three hours of a pretty much insane experience”. And if that’s true, people will come. There is always an audience for the real show.

Avatar: The Way of the Water is set to open in theaters on December 16, 2022.
