Strange but true: the head of the world of DC movies (along with producer Peter Safran) is James Gunn, writer and director of films such as guardians of the galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Gunn and Safran are now the CEOs of DC Studios – and the first men to hold these titles – and so they begin the process of reshaping the DC Cinematic Universe.
So what are they going to do? It will take years for any of their plans to come to fruition, but Gunn is already tweeting about being at work. In a thread he posted over the weekend, he wrote that he and Safran were “listening and open to anything as we embark on this journey,” but noted that his initial goal for the future was “to craft the new DCU and tell the greatest story ever”. Told through multiple movies, TV shows, and animated projects.
It might have just been an oversight, but it’s interesting that Gunn only called it the ‘DCU’ and not the ‘DCEU’ or DC Extended Universe, which is the official term for the web of interconnected DC movies released since Steel man in 2013. (These films include Justice League, wonder woman, Aquamanthe recent black adamand the next The flash.) When Gunn says he’s crafting a “new DCU” does that literally mean they’re starting a whole new universe with a new continuity and story, or just a twist of phrase because with him and Safran in charge, are they moving into new management? It’s not clear.
The next WBD movie based on DC Comics, Shazam! Fury of the godsis set to hit theaters on March 17, 2023. Meanwhile, Gunn’s next movie is for Marvel, not DC, because it has Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theaters next year. (He also has a Guardians holiday special on Disney+ before that as well. These press tours should be interesting.)
DC Comics That Can’t Become DC Movies
These popular DC Comics titles may never get their own DC movies. (Sorry.)
