Wakanda banned forever in China?

Fresh off its third consecutive week at the top of the North American box office, we learn that black adam may not receive a lucrative release in China.

Each year, the China Film Administration only allows 34 foreign films to be shown in theaters, with each film required to submit to the government-appointed board of directors before it can play in theaters there. The whimsical nature of what the board will allow can range from the magic shown in the movies to something as small as a Taiwanese patch displayed on the arm of a jacket. Even removing the widely discussed patch on Maverick’s jacket didn’t save Top Gun: Maverick to be banned. Of course, with $1.4 billion worldwide, this ban probably didn’t hurt. maverick too.

It’s also not uncommon for movies to alter their content to appease the boards, like Fantastic Beast: Dumbledore’s Secrets deleted all references to Dumbledore’s love for another man, as any reference to homosexuality is banned in the country.

It was this last point that saw the last MCU film: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever banned in the country because it would feature one of the main characters in a same-sex relationship.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had to contend with the latest releases never seeing a release in the country, with the latest MCU movie to be released being 2019. Spider-Man: Far From Home while its sequel: No coming home would have been banned due to the fact that the Statue of Liberty was a major plot element.

But Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is no ordinary film, it’s a sequel to the very first superhero film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and many people are eagerly waiting to see how the filmmakers handled the tragic passing of the main star Chadwick Boseman. The first one Black Panther was able to secure a release in China where he added just over $105 million to his bank account.

Alas, with the world premiere of wakanda forever set for November 11 in all territories except China, Warner Brother’s decided to skip that date and release their own comic book movie black adam. With comic book movies generally highly profitable in the country and a Dwayne Johnson star that saw solid dollars at the box office, it seemed like a decent alternative for comic book fans looking to hit the movies.

But sometimes we underestimate how mean-spirited people can be according to rumor (and we have to repeat that, at the time of this writing, these reports are just rumors. Of course, where there are smoke, there’s usually fire) that these Marvel fans, eagerly anticipating the release of wakanda forever bombarded the China Film Administration with reports that one of the stars of black adamin this case Pierce Brosnan, had mentioned in a previous interview that he had once met the Dalai Lama.

Relations with China and Tibet have been strained since the 1950s, when the highly religious people of Tibet staged a large-scale revolt against communist-ruled China, with the Dalai Lama forced to flee the country. Since then, any film with the slightest connection to Tibet or the Dalai Lama has seen the CFA ban those films by removing all Keanu Reeves films from their streaming services after the actor appeared at a concert for Tibet.

At the time of this writing, black adam still lists a November 11 release date in China, and the ban on the two comic book movies has yet to be fully confirmed, but with multiple sites reporting the news, it’s only a matter of time before to see confirmation (which, if history is any indication, may just be the movie not playing in any theaters without any official word from the China Film Administration).

The ban may not affect wakanda forever almost as much as he will black adam because this film was really counting on the Chinese box office to bring it closer to its break-even point, which should be between $500 and $600 million worldwide (Box Office Mojo has it at $319 million worldwide) .
