operation fortune release pulled

Will Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune be streamed?

What happened to Guy Ritchie Operation Fortune: Ruse of War? The big-budget spy hug was originally slated for a March 2022 theatrical release from STX, only to see its debut canceled at the eleventh hour. While many have blamed the fact that some of the villains are apparently Ukrainian (a faux pas given the war in Ukraine), a new report in Deadline suggests that this is only a minor concern and that the commotion behind the scenes of the STX distributor is more to be blamed. Indeed the trade now says Operation Fortune will likely debut via a high-profile streaming release, though none have been named yet.

The report notes that, for a time, Lionsgate – which has picked up numerous STX movies – was willing to release it, only to have them back down once they realized it would go against Gerard Butler. Plane, which is getting a great early buzz. It’s strange that Operation Fortune couldn’t find another taker given that Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham’s latest film, man’s angerhas grossed over $100 million worldwide, despite being released at the height of the pandemic.

Operation Fortune: Ruse of War stars Jason Statham as the leader of a spy team (which includes Aubrey Plaza) who recruits a movie star (played by Josh Hartnett) to infiltrate the inner circle of an evil billionaire, played by Hugh Grant. Considering the set, one would assume the film is fairly commercial, but alas, it will likely appear on a streaming service very soon. Ritchie, for his part, seems quite happy to work with streamers, having already made a film with Jake Gyllenhaal that Amazon Studios partially financed. Maybe Operation Fortune will be a Prime Video exclusive?

Earlier this year, STX released Chris Pine’s film, The contractor thanks to a limited movie/streaming deal with Paramount Pictures and Showtime. This excellent movie has been vastly under-watched, so hopefully Operation Fortune can ensure a better deployment.
